Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Farmers and Farm Workers, Distress and Wellbeing

Farmers form Europe, Central, South and Southeast Asia and elsewhere have a long history of significant contributions to Australian agriculture. Responses to farmer mental health and suicide has tended to overlook the culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) sector within agriculture. 

While CALD famers and farm workers share similar experiences associated with distress related to volatile markets and the impacts of climate change they also experience culturally specific understandings of what mental health is and how to reduce distress. Our report on the mental health and wellbeing of CALD men in farming addresses the key factors associated with distress and recovery for South Australian CALD farmers and for farm workers on humanitarian visas.
